Chapter 4: Soil

QuestionAnswer
Soil is loose weathered material on earth's surface in which plants can grow. It is a mixture of rock particles, minerals, decayed organic matter, water, and air.
Bedrock is the solid layer of rock beneath the soil.
Humus is a dark colored substance that forms when plants and animals decay.
Geologist look a 3 things to identify the type of soil
Soil Fertility How well the soil supports plant growth
Soil Texture The feel and size of the particles in the soil
Soil pH How much acid is in the soil 5. Layers of Soil
O Horizon Made of organic material of plant and animal remains
A Horizon Made of topsoil
B Horizon Made of subsoil
C Horizon Made of bedrock that is beginning to weather and break apart
Bedrock Solid layer of rock
How is humus formed A. Decomposers: breaks up remains of dead plants and animals. B. Burrowers: Mix up the soil
