Soil Soil is loose weathered material on earth's surface in which plants can grow. It is a mixture of rock particles, minerals, decayed organic matter, water, and air.
Bedrock Bedrock is the solid layer of rock beneath the soil.
Humus Humus is a dark colored substance that forms when plants and animals decay.
Geologists look a 3 things to identify the type of soil A. Soil Fertility: How well the soil supports plant growth B. Soil Texture: The feel and size of the particles in the soil C, Soil pH: How much acid is in the soil
O Horizon: Made of organic material of plant and animal remains
A Horizon: Made of topsoil
B Horizon: Made of subsoil
C Horizon Made of bedrock that is beginning to weather and break apart
Bedrock Solid layer of rock
A. Decomposers: A. Decomposers: breaks up remains of dead plants and animals.
B. Burrowers: B. Burrowers: Mix up the soil
