| soil fertility | How well the soil supports plant growth |
| soil texture | The feel and size of the particles in the soil |
| soil ph | How much acid is in the soil |
| o horizon | Made of organic material of plant and animal remains |
| a horizon | Made of topsoil |
| b horizon | Made of subsoil |
| c horizon | Made of bedrock that is beginning to weather and break apart |
| bedrock | Solid layer of rock |
| decomposers | breaks up remains of dead plants and animals. |
