Anaphylaxis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the immune system? | Set of tissues and cells that work together to protect the body from invaders |
| What is the lymphatic system? | It is a system that builds, develops and moves immune cells around the body through a series of vessels and tissues. |
| What are three key tissues that produce immune cells? | Spleen, thymus and bone marrow |
| What are two types of different immune responses? | Cellular(Production of special attacking cells) and humoral(production of antibodies). |
| What are antibodies also called? | Immunoglobins |
| What are allergens? What are common ones? | An allergen is a substance that can provoke an allergic reaction in a susceptible person to that specific substance. Food such as tree nuts, shellfish and milk. Medications such as radiology contrast, NSAIDs and antibodies. |
| What is degranulation? | Chemical mediators released from mast cells in allergic response. |
| What is histamine? What is the process that releases it? | It is a chemical messenger that drives the immune responses. It is released during degranulation. |
| What is an allergic reaction? | It is an over reaction of the immune system in response to an allergen. |
| What is anaphylaxis? | Anaphylaxis is defined as the sudden onset of symptoms after exposure to a known or suspected allergen. It includes two or more body systems and the reaction occurs rapidly when exposed to an allergen. |
| What are the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis? | Respiratory distress, hypotension, skin symptoms and GI symptoms. (Difficulty breathing, wheezing, red skin, flushed skin, hives, stomach cramps, vomiting, tachycardia) |
| What are the differences between anaphylaxis and an allergic reaction? | Anaphylaxis affects two more systems and happens rapidly with potentially life threatening symptoms. An allergic reaction happens within minutes to hours and typically has more mild, non-life-threatening symptoms. |
| Stimulation of what nervous system can fix almost all the problems of anaphylaxis? What neurotransmitters facilitate it? | The sympathetic nervous system. Epinephrine and norepinephrine. |
| What receptor is the heart stimulated by? | Beta 1 |
| What receptor are the blood vessels stimulated by? | Alpha 1 |
| What receptor are the lungs and GI tract stimulated by? | Beta 2 |
