Anaphylaxis

What is the immune system? Set of tissues and cells that work together to protect the body from invaders
What is the lymphatic system? It is a system that builds, develops and moves immune cells around the body through a series of vessels and tissues.
What are three key tissues that produce immune cells? Spleen, thymus and bone marrow
What are two types of different immune responses? Cellular(Production of special attacking cells) and humoral(production of antibodies).
What are antibodies also called? Immunoglobins
What are allergens? What are common ones? An allergen is a substance that can provoke an allergic reaction in a susceptible person to that specific substance. Food such as tree nuts, shellfish and milk. Medications such as radiology contrast, NSAIDs and antibodies.
What is degranulation? Chemical mediators released from mast cells in allergic response.
What is histamine? What is the process that releases it? It is a chemical messenger that drives the immune responses. It is released during degranulation.
What is an allergic reaction? It is an over reaction of the immune system in response to an allergen.
What is anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is defined as the sudden onset of symptoms after exposure to a known or suspected allergen. It includes two or more body systems and the reaction occurs rapidly when exposed to an allergen.
What are the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis? Respiratory distress, hypotension, skin symptoms and GI symptoms. (Difficulty breathing, wheezing, red skin, flushed skin, hives, stomach cramps, vomiting, tachycardia)
What are the differences between anaphylaxis and an allergic reaction? Anaphylaxis affects two more systems and happens rapidly with potentially life threatening symptoms. An allergic reaction happens within minutes to hours and typically has more mild, non-life-threatening symptoms.
Stimulation of what nervous system can fix almost all the problems of anaphylaxis? What neurotransmitters facilitate it? The sympathetic nervous system. Epinephrine and norepinephrine.
What receptor is the heart stimulated by? Beta 1
What receptor are the blood vessels stimulated by? Alpha 1
What receptor are the lungs and GI tract stimulated by? Beta 2
