What was the watergate scandel? Nixon paranoid and power hungry - Used power to spy on/punish his political rivels; had the democratic national commitee headquarters burglary in june 1972 - ordered by Nixon's men; he tried to cover up his knowledge of it; forced to resign with disgrace

What was the children's crusade? Black students marching for civil rights against Eugene "Bull" Connor in Burmingham, AL May 1963; he took a peacfyl protest and had the marchers ; sprayed with high power fire hoses and then had the dogs attack them; people ran for their lives;
What was the outcome of the children's crusade? Americans saw what happened and were sympatetic to the black protestors and other protests broke out throughout the US
Who was Bull Connor? Birmingham, AL Commissioner of Public Safety - controlled the police and fire departments - had them attack the protestors of the children's crusade
Who was Neil Armstrong? First man to walk on the Moon in 1969 - One small step for man...one giant leap for mankind
What was the Cuban Missile Crisis? cuba who had alliance with RUssia to place missiles in Cuba which is 90 miles from Florida; these missiles could hurt US and worried JFK; US had a naval blockade so no missiles would go off and destroy US; Russia backed off; closest US/Russia in nuc war
Cold War Time after WWII where US and Russia were hostile to each other; competed with military, political and economic alliances; US produced over 70K nuc weapons;
WHat was the Red scare? Americans afraid of the Russian spies getting into the US and stealing secrets of US weapons; "Reds" nickname for communists; Julias and Ethel Rosenberg Americans who spied for Russia
Who was Joe McCarthy? senator from WI; felt US was big time infiltrated by Russian spies; It was shown he exagerated the spying happening and he was censored and left the spotlight
What did the Knights of Columbus convince President Eisenhower to do? Add the words "Under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance
What was NATO? North Atlantic Treaty Organization - union of democratic countries opposed to communist Russia; US a part of it
What was the Warsaw Pact? Federation of Communist European countries formed by Russia
What was Sputnik? first satellite launched into space by Russia in 1957
Who was Lee Harvery Oswald? assassinated JFK from the 6th floor of a warehouse while JFK was in a parade; shot in head and killed instantly; Oswald arrested but shot and killed by a nightclub owner Jack Ruby; no answer for why he killed JFK
Who was Martin Luther King? baptist minster and civil rights activist; wanted blacks to protest peacefully; organized protests and gave impassioned speaches around the US; He was around when US signed Civil rights Act but was assassinated soon after by a white man who opposed this
What is Roe v. Wade?q Supreme Court decision - 1973 - allowed practice of abortion in all 50 states; prior to this ruling, abortion was illegal in christian countries; this ruling meant abortion could not be banned and must be practiced
Who was Jimmy Carter? elected president in 1976; peanut farmer from GA; wanted to fix US after nixon but was not a strong leader; he was found to be a weak person; economy struggled under him;
Who was ArchBishop Fulton Sheen? host of a tv show "Life Worth Living"; bishop from NY; preached gospel on show and gave spiritual advice to millions; not a saint yet
What are Baby Boomers? children born between 1946 and 1964 (76 million) due to population growth from soldiers coming home and starting families after WWII
What was the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Passed by Congress and Pres. Johnson that outlawed any form of discrimination based on gender, race or nation of segrigation
What happened in the Korean War? US tried to stop Communist North Korea from taking over South Korea; russia gave supplies to North Korea to fight; lots of money invested in the war
What are the causes/Outcomes of the Korea V. Vietnam War Lots of money spent on Korea and weapons; vietnam - many US lives lost
