What is the purpose of the mouth in the digestive process? The beginning of the digestive process that starts with mastication and the action of enzymes.

Esophagus Tube that transports food to the stomach using peristalsis
Peristalsis automatic, wave-like contraction the aids in movement of food through the GI tract
Stomach Secretes mucous, hydrochloric acid, pepsinogen and gastrin breaks down food and turns it into chyme
Small intestine Largest part of the digestive tract that receives chyme from the stomach, bile, and pancreatic enzymes to further digest the chyme and absorbs the food particles through villi
What does Gastrin do? Helps stimulate stomach and acid activity
Large Intestine Reabsorbs what's needs and expels the waste products Forms vitamin K
Rectum Stores poop
Anus Eliminates poop
Liver Detoxes blood Produces bile synthesizes proteins stores glucose Produces vitamins.
What is the function of bile? Breaks down fats
Gallbladder Stores and releases bile produces by the liver into the small intestine to aid with digestion
Pancreas Helps produces insulin and Secretes digestive enzyme into the small intestine
Chyme Semiliquid mixture of partially digested food and digestive secretions found in the stomach
Absorption The processed of digested food being taking into the blood stream
Gastrocolic reflex Initiates elimination, stimulated by food indigestion

Metabolism The process of nutrients being used in the body after digestion and absorption
Anabolism Building of body tissue
Catabolism Breakdown of larger molecules for energy
What should you be aware of with diarrhea Can cause fluid and electrolyte imbalances and dehydration
