QuestionAnswer
Shay's Rebellion Daniel Shay and farmers in Massachusetts protest over owed back pay. Many were Revolutionary War Veterans who were never paid for their service. Many were in debt.
Constitutional Convention In May of 1787, delegates from 12 of the 13 states met in Philadelphia to fix the Articles of Confederation. They ended up writing the Constitution.
Independence Hall This was the building that the delegates met in. They met in Philadelphia.
Virginia Plan This plan called for a legislature divided into two bodies with representation based on a state’s population. Favored by large states because it gave them more power.
New Jersey Plan This plan called for each state to have one vote in Congress instead of the number of votes being based on population. Favored by small states because it gave them more power.
Great Compromise Roger Sherman proposed this. It solved the debate between large and small states, which included a two-house legislature, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state would have 2 Senators and representatives based on population.
3/5th Compromise Agreement on how to count men and women held in slavery for purposes of taxation and representation in Congress. It counted three-fifths of each state’s slave population toward a state’s representation.
George Washington I am a representative from the state of Virginia. I was the general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. I presided over the Convention and I became the first President of the United States.
Alexander Hamilton I am a representative from the state of New York. I became the first Secretary of the Treasury. I argued for a strong national government to fix the Articles of Confederation. I ended up dying in a duel with Aaron Burr.
James Madison I am a representative from the state of Virginia. I proposed the Virginia Plan and I’m known as the “Father of the Constitution” because I wrote most of it.
Benjamin Franklin I am a representative from Pennsylvania. I was a founding father who helped write the Declaration of Independence with Thomas Jefferson. I was the oldest person at the Convention at 81. I believed states should hold more power.
George Mason I am a representative from Virginia. I believe that the Constitution should have a Bill of Rights!
Amendment a change to the Constitution! There are 27 of them!
"We the People" These are the first three words of the Constitution. It means that "we the people" get to create a government for everyone!
Executive Branch This is the President and their cabinet and they enforce the laws
Legislative Branch This is Congress (House of Representatives & Senate) and they make the laws
Judicial Branch This is the court system and the Supreme Court and they interpret the laws. They decide if laws are unconstitutional or constitutional.
Bill of Rights These are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. These are important because they protect our rights as citizens.
Articles of Confederation This was our first government in the United States. It was a WEAK government because Congress had no power to tax, there was no President, states printed their own money, no Supreme Court, and there was no national army.
