QuestionAnswer
What does quality of life mean? How the people of a country live e.g. education, healthcare
Where are high income countries distributed in the world? Mainly in the Northern hemisphere, primarily Europe. A few in Asia and South America
What does GDP mean? Gross domestic income
What does GDP measure? The total value of all goods and services within a country
What factors that can cause poverty in a country? Location, climate, Natural hazards, education and healthcare, Gender inequality, War, Politics
What is GDP per capita? The wealth of country shared out by each person inside the country
What does having a high birth rate compared to a low birth rate determine whether a country is poor or not? A country with a low birth rate mean that the women of the country will have more careers and jobs. A high birth rate mean that women will choose to have more children to help work around the house or on a farm, leading to poorer conditions.
What is globalisation? Process where the world becomes more interconnected, We can communicate, trade, travel and share cultures more easily around the world
How does communication drive globalisation? The growth of fibre optic cables and satellite communication has increased global connections via the internet
What are multi-national companies? Companies that have their headquarters in countries such as the USA, but they have factories in different countries in places such as South-East Asia and Africa
What is trade surplus? sell more than you buy
What is trade deficit? buy more than you sell
What are primary products? low value and prices are determined on the stock exchange, Generally unprocessed raw materials e.g. cocoa beans
What are manufactured goods? products which are processed or made into something else e.g. chocolate bar
What is free trade? Trade freely between countries with no added costs
What are subsides? extra money provided to certain industries to support them e.g. hill sheep farmers in Wales
