Chemical bonding

QuestionAnswer
whats the octet rule states that atoms tend to undergo chemical changes in order to reach an electron arrangement of 8 electrons in their outer energy level
what is valency valency is a measure of how many bonds an atom will form to satisfy the octet rule,
between who does a ionic bond occur a metal and a non-metal
what happens when a metal donates a electron becomes a cation positive
what happens when a non-metal gains an electron beccomes a anionn, negative
whats ionic bonding force of attraction between opposite charged ions
intra meaning inside
what is electronegativity is the relative attraction that an atom in a molecule has for a shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
whats a covalent bond a chemical bond formed when 2 atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
whats a molecule a group of atoms joined together, smallest particle of an element or compound that can exist independently
whats a sigma bond is formed by the head on overlap of 2 orbitals
whats a pi bond is formed by the sideway overlap of p orbitals
whats the vsepr theory states the shape of a molecule depends on the number of pairs of electrons around the central atom.electron pairs repel eachother keeping as far away as possible.
whats a polar covalent bond A polar covalent bond is a bond in which there is unequal sharing of the pair (or pairs) of electrons.
Pure covalent A pure covalent bond is a bond in which there is equal sharing of the pair (or pairs) of electrons
Uses of electronegativity values To predict the polarity of covalent bonds. To predict the type of bonding in a compound.
Non-polar molecules A non-polar molecule is a molecule that has an even distribution of electrical charges due to the symmetry of the molecule.
Intermolecular forces are the forces of attraction that exist between molecules.
Van der Waals forces are weak, intermolecular forces of attraction that exist between all molecules.
Hydrogen bonds are formed in which hydrogen atoms are bonded to nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
