Unit 9 Flashcards
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Magnetism | The attraction of a magnet for another object |
| Magnet | Anything that attracts another object (commonly made of iron, cobalt, nickel) |
| Magnetic Pole | A pole is the area where the magnet is the strongest Opposite poles : Attract (opposites attract!) Same poles: Repel (push away) |
| Magnetic Fields | Magnetic forces are given off all around a magnet Some magnetic forces are strong, some are weak! |
| Electromagnets | Strong magnets that can be turned on and off (Lifts heavy pieces of metal example: Junked cars) The more loops of wire in an electromagnet, the stronger it is Closer the coils, stronger the electromagnet |
| Atom | Smallest part of an element All matter is made up of atoms Inside the atom : Nucleus (core of atom) Protons (positive charge) Neutrons (neutral charge) Electrons (negative charge) |
| Ferromagnetic Material | A type of material that is strongly attracted to magnets and can become a magnet itself. Examples: Iron, Steel Nickel, Cobalt |
