Magnetism The attraction of a magnet for another object
Magnet Anything that attracts another object (commonly made of iron, cobalt, nickel)
Magnetic Pole A pole is the area where the magnet is the strongest Opposite poles : Attract (opposites attract!) Same poles: Repel (push away)
Magnetic Fields Magnetic forces are given off all around a magnet Some magnetic forces are strong, some are weak!
Electromagnets Strong magnets that can be turned on and off (Lifts heavy pieces of metal example: Junked cars) The more loops of wire in an electromagnet, the stronger it is Closer the coils, stronger the electromagnet
Atom Smallest part of an element All matter is made up of atoms Inside the atom : Nucleus (core of atom) Protons (positive charge) Neutrons (neutral charge) Electrons (negative charge)
Ferromagnetic Material A type of material that is strongly attracted to magnets and can become a magnet itself. Examples: Iron, Steel Nickel, Cobalt
