What is interest? That people deposit and loan it out to make more money
What did World War I veterans try to do in 1932? The veterans sang the song “America” on the steps of the U.S Capitol
How did the government respond to WWI veterans camping out in the capital? By removing them.
Who became president in 1933? Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt became president in 1933.
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? Why did they help? They are called fireside chats.
What did Roosevelt want to do instead of just giving money to unemployed workers? He wanted to create jobs for them.
What is a deficit? A debt which happens when the government spends more money than it takes in.
What were “runs” on banks? When depositors panicked and tried to take out all their money.
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? When employees refused to work until conditions got better.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? They thought the New Deal gave them too much power.
What idea is capitalism based on? People who invest money in a business to get most of its profits.
What is a drought? A long period of dry weather.
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? Breadbasket was the nickname that was given to.
Which state did many families move to after losing everything in the dust storms? California is the state they moved to after losing everything.
Why didn’t FDR support African Americans during his first term as president? So he wouldn’t lose political support in the South.
What is a hobo? Jobless and homeless people who went around the country looking for work or just something to do.
What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? Country schools hired fewer teachers and bought fewer books, Cities school learned in one room, often having untrained teachers as young as 16.
What is one way African Americans experienced discrimination during the depression? They were already living in poverty when the Great Depression started.
How did the girls in the Secret Helpers Club help people? They left food in front of poor peoples porches .
What were the two main sources of entertainment for families during the depression? Radios and movies
How did Hitler become popular in Germany? By blaming Germany’s troubles on certain groups, especially Jews And communists.
What is war production? Making weapons and other materials for the military.
Why was FDR getting elected in 1940 special? Roosevelt encouraged American industry to produce war goods and sell them to Germany’s enemies.
What is one way that the New Deal helped America? Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built a series of dams to control floods.
How did women help during war time? Women took jobs in the important war industries.
Which superhero was created during the Great Depression? Superman was created during the Great Depression.
