What does it mean to “buy something on credit”? To pay a portion of the price with a promise to pay the rest in parts.
What is a stock? A share or part of a business .
A share or part of a business . So they can sell their stocks when their price goes up to earn money.
What happened on October 29, 1929? Prices fell so much
What does prosperity mean? Prosperity means wealth.
What does depression mean when referring to the economy? Times the economy is not doing well.
True or False: Just the US was affected by the Great Depression. Why do you think this is? False Events in the U.S. at that time also affected many other countries and led to a worldwide Depression.
What is a mortgage? A loan to buy a house.
Who was elected president in 1928? How did he feel about the stock market crash? Herbert Hoover
What is interest? Why do banks charge interest? A fee the bank charges based on the amount of money loaned.
What was the nickname given to the shelters people built out of anything they could find? Hoovervilles
Which organization tried to provide cheap food to unemployed people? The International Apple Shippers Association .
What did World War I veterans try to do in 1932? Were they successful? They tried to get the bonuses that were promised to them.
How did the government respond to the WWI veterans camping out in the capital? They launched tear gas at the veterans and burned their possessions.
What was the name of the song written by E. Y. Harburg during the Great Depression? Brother Could, You Spend A Dime.
Who became president in 1933? By the time Roosevelt took office in 1933, one quarter of the U.S. The workforce was unemployed.
How many people in the US were unemployed in 1933? That was 15 million people!
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? Why did they help? His plain speaking and positive attitude made people feel better. He kept doing these broadcasts, which became known as fireside chats.
What nickname did people give the programs designed to get people back on their feet? Why did they use this nickname? A rival called These programs alphabet soup and jokingly called the president FDR
What was one of the most successful programs of the New Deal? The New Deal even created jobs for unemployed artists, musicians,actors, and writers.
What did Roosevelt want to do instead of just giving money to unemployed workers? He wanted to create jobs for them.
What is a deficit? A debt, which happens when the government spends more money than it takes in.
What were “runs” on banks? When depositors panicked and tired to take out all their money.
In May of 1938 how many people were still out of work? 11 million people were still out of work.
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? When employees refuse to work until conditions.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? They thought the New Deal gave the federal government too much power.
What idea is capitalism based on? People invest money in a business should get most of its profits.
What was the End Poverty in California program designed to do? For the state to take over unused factories/ farms and put people to work
Why did the church order Father Charles Coughlin to stop his broadcasts? He was attacking Jewish people on his radio show.
Who was appointed US Secretary of Labor in 1911? Frances Perkins
Who became the highest ranking African American woman in FDR’s administration? Mary McLeon Bethune
What is a drought? A longer period of dry weather.
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? The area once called America’s breadbasket, because of all the wheat grown there became known as the Dust Bowl.
What caused the soil to dry up and blow away? But farmers plowed up a lot of the grass to plant wheat.
Which states were hit the hardest by the dust storms? One year, the dust storms might be worse in South Dakota.
Why are dust storms dangerous? People’s mouths and noses filled with dust, and dust got into houses, coating every thing.
Which state did many families move to after losing everything in the dust storms? Of work in California. Families who had lost almost everything in the Dust Bowl packed up their cars and headed west.
What is a sharecropper? Farmers who paid the owners in crops.
Why didn’t FDR support African Americans during his first term as president? So he wouldn't lose political support in the south.
What is a hobo? They rode illegally on freight trains, or just walked.
Why did hoboes write messages in chalk or coal? These messages offered directions, information, or warnings to other hoboes.
What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? School systems hired fewer teachers and bought fewer books.
