What do we call the period from 1920 to 1929? Why do we call it that? We call that period the Roaring’ 20s, we call it that because everyone wanted to have fun and dance.
What does it mean to “buy something on credit”? The term “Buy something on credit” means to pay a portion of the price with a promise to pay the rest in parts called installments.
What is a stock? A stock is a share (part) of a business.
Why do people buy stocks? People buy stocks because their prices rises.
What happened on October 29, 1929? On this date, prices fell so much that many people lost huge amounts of money.
What does prosperity mean? Prosperity means wealth.
What does depression mean when referring to the economy? The term “Depression” (Referring to an economy) means times when the economy is not doing well.
True or False: Just the US was affected by the Great Depression. Why do you think this is? It is false because many other countries were affected and it became a worldwide depression.
What is a mortgage? A mortgage is the loan to buy the house.
Who was elected president in 1928? How did he feel about the stock market crash? Herbert Hoover was elected president in 1928. He said the worst was over and things will get better. Hoover was wrong.
What is interest? Why do banks charge interest? An interest is money that people deposit and loan it. Banks charge interest because of the amount of the money loaned.
What was the nickname given to the shelters people built out of anything they could find? The nickname was given Hoovervilles.
Which organization tried to provide cheap food to unemployed people? The International Apple shippers association tried to provide food to unemployed people.
What did World War I veterans try to do in 1932? Were they successful? WW1 veterans try to get their money back, many needed the money sooner. They weren’t successful.
How did the government respond to the WWI veterans camping out in the capital? The government told the Army general to remove them.
What was the name of the song written by E. Y. Harburg during the Great Depression? The name was “Brother, can you spare a dime?”
Who became president in 1933? Franklin Delano Roosevelt was made president in 1933.
How many people in the US were unemployed in 1933? 15 million people were unemployed.
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? Why did they help? The broadcasts were called “fireside chats”. They made people have hope and gain confidence for America.
What nickname did people give the programs designed to get people back on their feet? Why did they use this nickname? It was named “alphabet soup” because people used acer mins.
What was one of the most successful programs of the New Deal? The most successful program was the Civilian Converation Corps.
What did Roosevelt want to do instead of just giving money to unemployed workers? He wanted to give them jobs.
What is a deficit? A debt, which happens when the government spends more money it takes in.
What were “runs” on banks? Runs on banks were when depositors panicked and tried to take out all their money.
In May of 1938 how many people were still out of work? 11 million people were still out of work.
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? Workers to go on strike means that they refused to work until working conditions got better.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? The Supreme Court was against some of Roosevelt’s programs because most of the court thought the New Deal gave the federal government too much power.
What idea is capitalism based on? Capitalism was based on the people who invent money in a business should get most of its profits.
What was the End Poverty in California program designed to do? The idea was for the state to take over unused factories and farms.
Why did the church order Father Charles Coughlin to stop his broadcasts? The church ordered Father Charles Coughlin to stop his broadcasts because he replaced his calls with Anti-Jewish attacks.
Who was appointed US Secretary of Labor in 1911? Frances Perkins was appointed US Secretary of Labor in 1911.
Who became the highest ranking African American woman in FDR’s administration? Mary McLeod became highest ranking African American women in FDR’s administration.
What is a drought? A drought is a long period of dry wealthy.
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? The nickname given used to be the America’s breadbasket, after the drought it was nicknamed the Dust Bowl.
What caused the soil to dry up and blow away? The wind and weather caused the soil to dry up and blow away.
Which states were hit the hardest by the dust storms? South Dakota and Kansas were hit hard by the dust storms.
Why are dust storms dangerous? Dust storms were dangerous because it got in people’s mouths and noses.

What is a sharecropper? A sharecropper is a farmers who paid the owners in crops.

What is a hobo? Hobos are jobless and homeless people who went around the country looking for jobs or something to do.

What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? The difference between country schools and schools in cities is, schools in the country learned in one room school houses, often from untrained teachers as young as 16 and schools in cities, classes might have from 30-50 students.

What started World War II? In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, starting World War II.
What is war production? War production means to make weapons and other materials for the military.
What led the US Congress to declare war on Japan? The US Congress declared war on Japan because Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S naval.
Why was FDR getting elected in 1940 special? FDR was getting elected in 1940 special because he was the first president ever to serve three terms.
What is one way that the New Deal helped America? One way that the New Deal helped America was by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built a series of dams to control floods.
How did women help during war time? Women helped during war time was by taking important jobs.
Which superhero was created during the Great Depression? The superhero was Superman.
