What started World War II? Germany invaded Poland.
What is war production? War production is making weapons and other materials for the millitary.
What led the US Congress to declare war on Japan? Japan lauched a surprise attack on the U.S naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Why was FDR getting elected in 1940 special? It was special because he was the only president to serve 3 terms.
What is one way that the New Deal helped America? One way is TVA built a series of dams to control floods
How did women help during war time? Woman took jobs in the important war industries
Which superhero was created during the Great Depression? Superman.
What is a hobo? They are people who illegally did stuff.
Why did hobbes write messages in chalk or coal? So they can warn other hoboes.
What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? Country children learned in a one room schoolhouse and in cities classes might have 30-50 kids in a room
Why did companies start putting pretty patterns on their cotton sacks? Because woman sewed clothes from the cotton sacks that held bulk foods lik flour and sugar.
What is one way African Americans experienced discrimination during the depression? White people got 32.66 dollars check and African Americans got 1929
How did the girls in the Secret Helpers Club help people? They took 10 cents a week in dues from each member and bought soup and bread and put a basket of food on poor peoples porch.
What were the two main sources of entertainment for families during the depression? Movies and radios.
What was the name of the child star who was in movies during the depression? Shirley temple.
What is a drought? A drought is a long period of dry weather
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? It was called the breadbasket and then after it was called the dust bowl.
What caused the soil to dry up and blow away? Farmers plowed up a lot of grass to plant wheat and they also let their livestock eat too much of it.
Which states were hit the hardest by the dust storms? Oklahoma and Texas.
Why are dust storms dangerous? Because it can trap people in cars or outdoors, peoples nose and mouth,and can get into houses.
Which state did many families move to after losing everything in the dust storms? California
What is a sharecropper? Farmers who paid the owners in crops.
Why didn’t FDR support African Americans during his first term as president? So he wouldn’t lose political support in the south.
In May of 1938 how many people were still out of work? 11 million people.
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? It means that they will not not work until they paid more money.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? The Supreme Court ruled against some of Roosevelt's programs because they thought the New Deal he made gave the federal government too much power.
What idea is capitalism based on? Capitalism was based on the idea that people who invest money in a business should get most of the profits.
What was the End Poverty in California program designed to do? It was designed to take over unused factories and farms, then it would put people to work and then pay them is coupons.
Why did the church order Father Charles Coughlin to stop his broadcasts? Because it was talking about the anti-jewish attacks.
Who was appointed US Secretary of Labor in 1911? Frances Perkins
Who became the highest ranking African American woman in FDR’s administration? Mary McLeod Bethune.
Who became president in 1933? Franklin D Roosevelt.
How many people in the US were unemployed in 1933? About 15 million people.
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? Why did they help? They called it “fireside chats” They helped because it helped make people feel better.
