The Laws to Know

TermDefinition
FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) This federal law protects the privacy of student educational records. Under FERPA, you cannot share Personally Identifiable Information (PII)—such as student names, ID numbers, grades, or behavioral notes—with unvetted platforms.
COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) This federal law protects children under the age of 13 online by strictly regulating how commercial websites and apps collect, use, and track personal information from young students.
NYS EdLaw 2-D A New York State law mandating a district-approved Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) before sharing any student or staff data. If there is no DPA, inputting information is a violation.
