What is interest? Interest is a fee based on the amount of money loaned banks charge interest
What did World War I veterans try to do in 1932? They tried to travel to Washington DC
How did the government respond to the WWI veterans camping out in the capital? He responded by firing tear gas, burning down the camp, and depriving the veterans of the few possessions.
Who became president in 1933? Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt became president.
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? They called them fireside chats
What did Roosevelt want to do instead of just giving money to unemployed workers? Roosevelt wanted to get them jobs.
What is a deficit? Deficit is a debt which happens when the government spends more money than it takes in.
What were “runs” on banks? Runs on banks were when depositors panicked and tried to take out all their money.
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? It means when workers refused to work until working conditions got better.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? The Supreme Court ruled against some of Roosevelt’s programs because they felt like it was giving the federal government too much power.
What idea is capitalism based on Capitalism is based on the idea that people who invest money in a business and should get most of its profits.
What is a drought? A drought is a long period of dry weather.
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? The nickname was America’s breadbasket. It was called the dust bowl after the drought
Which state did many families move to after losing everything in the dust storms? They moved to California.
Why didn’t FDR support African Americans during his first term as president? He didn't support them because he didn't want to lose support from the South.
What is a hobo? A hobo is a jobless homeless person who goes around the country looking for work or just something to do.
What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? The differences were that city schools have 30 to 50 students in a classroom and country school kids all learned in one room, often untrained teachers as young as 16.
What is one way African Americans experienced discrimination during the depression? One way that they experienced discrimination during the depression is by getting less money than the white people.
How did the girls in the Secret Helpers Club help people? Girls helped them by buying them food and other stuff for them and leaving them on their front porches.
What were the two main sources of entertainment for families during the depression? Two main sources were the radio and the movies.
How did Hitler become popular in Germany? Hitler became popular in Germany by blaming Germany’s troubles on certain groups especially Jews and communists.
What is war production? War production is making weapons and other materials for the military.
Why was FDR getting elected in the 1940 special? It was special because it was his third time being selected for president
What is one way that the New Deal helped America? One way is they built a series of dams to control floods.
How did women help during war time? They helped by taking jobs in the war industry.
