Geology Part 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Crust | Outer layer of Earth. We live on the crust. It is the thinnest layer and made up of rock. |
| Mantle | The largest layer located between the crust and the core. It is made of magma. Convection currents occur here. |
| Outer Core | Liquid layer of the Earth's core. |
| Inner Core | The solid, dense center of Earth. Made of iron and other minerals. |
| Tectonic Plate | A large piece of the Earth’s crust that moves. |
| Continental Drift | The theory that continents are carried along, or drift, because of plate movement. |
| Convergent Boundary | Boundary between two colliding plates. The plates are moving towards each other. |
| Divergent Boundary | Boundary where 2 plates separate. The plates are moving away from each other. |
| Transform Boundary | Boundary between sliding plates; the plates slide past each other. Often results in earthquakes. |
| Subduction Zone | An area where an oceanic plate sinks into the soft layer of the mantle. This occurs at convergent plate boundaries. |
| Convection Currents | Very hot magma in the mantle that rises, then cools, then sinks again. This causes Earth's plates to move. |
| Geology | The study of Earth’s structure and history. |
| Pangaea | The supercontinent all continents were once part of millions of years ago. |
