ASCII American Standard Code for Information Interchange, a system for representing the English language alphabet in a computer using a 7-bit or 8-bit code. Also called DOS characters.
binary notation system A notation system based on two digits, 0 and 1.
bit A single binary digit
byte A set of eight binary digits.
character encoding A system that maps text characters to binary values.
copyright Legal protection for original expression in creative works.
data Facts in their raw, usually numeric form.
decimal notation system A notation system based on ten digits, 0 through 9.
digital property A type of intellectual property that is stored on, or accessed by, a computer system.
giga The prefix representing one billion. Examples include gigabyte, gigabits per second, and gigahertz. Abbreviated as G.
hertz A number of cycles per second.
hexadecimal notation system A notation system based on sixteen digits, 0 through 9 and A through F.
information Insight derived from analyzing data.
input (noun) The data entering a computer system; (verb) To enter data into a computer system.
intellectual property Property that consists of data, information, or creative works, rather than physical property.
kilo The prefix representing one thousand. Examples include kilobyte, kilobits per second, and kilohertz. Abbreviated as K.
mega The prefix representing one million. Examples include megabyte, megabits per second, and megahertz. Abbreviated as M.
output (noun) The data exiting a computer system; (verb) To send data out of a computer system.
patent Legal protection for inventions
peta The prefix representing one quadrillion. Examples include petabyte, petabits per second, and petahertz. Abbreviated as P.
processing Performing a math operation on input to change it to output.
processing speed The number of operations per second that a processing device performs, measured in hertz.
storage (device) A device where computer data is stored for future use, either temporarily or permanently.
storage (measurement) The amount of space that a file takes up on a storage device, or the capacity of a storage device, measured in bytes.
tera The prefix representing one trillion. Examples include terabyte, terabits per second, and terahertz. Abbreviated as T.
throughput The rate at which data moves from place to place, measured in bits per second (bps).
trademark Legal protection for words, phrases, symbols, and designs associated with a company or brand.
Unicode A modern method of character encoding that supports multiple languages and sets of symbols using code points and different character sets.
data monetization The process of using data to achieve measurable economic benefits.
big data Has three core characteristics Volume, Velocity, and Variety.
analytics Is the process of discovering and interpreting patterns in data.
