| Evidence - Facts | a fact is a piece of information that can be proved to be true |
| Evidence - Statistics | statistics are numbers facts that tell us something about a group of people or set of data |
| Evidence - Expert evidence | expert evidence includes statements or information from people or organisations considered to be experts on a particular subject |
| Rhetorical question | when a writer asks the audience a question, not to gain an answer but to challenge the audience. |
| Repetition | using a word or phrase several times |
| Alliteration | repeating the same letter at the start of the word |
| Anecdote | a short, personal story |
| Rebuttal | discussing the opposing arguement and refuting it |
| Hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally |
| Emotive Language | using language that appeals to the emotions of the reader. It grabs their attention and pulls at their heartstrings |
| Inclusive Language | using words such as us, we, they and them. This can create a sense of inclusivity or exclusivity with the reader. |
| Visuals | this includes photographs, drawings, graphs and ect. This can involve the use of colours and brightness to promote the authors main contention |
| Appeal to sense of justice | belief that we have the right to be treated fairly, often expressed in Australia as giving people a 'fair go' |
| Appeal to being modern and up to date | this play on people's desire to be part of the in crowd and be aware of trends, to gain popularity and acceptance |
| Appeal to family values | this argues in favour of traditional family life |
| Appeal to fear | portraying an extreme scenario as highly probable in order to evoke an emotional response in the reader |
| Appeal to hip pocket nerve | persuades the reader to feel concerned for their financial wellbeing, making them feel 'ripped off' or overcharged |
| Appeal to patriotism | exploits people's loyalty to their country by suggesting that their country is under some kind of attak |
| Appeal to traditional and custom | encourages, at one level, resistance to change, It also focuses retain links with the past and to value history and heritage |
| Appeal to common sense | argues a claim is obvouisly true based on everyday knowledge |
