what is interest? It is a fee based on the money you loaned.
What did World War I veterans try to do in 1932? They tried to get the bonuses that they were promised.
How did the government respond to the WWI veterans camping out in the capital? They used tear gas and they burned all of their belongings.
who became president in 1933? Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
What did people call the broadcasts that the president gave? They were called fireside chats.
What did Roosevelt want to do instead of just giving money to unemployed workers? He wanted to give jobs to the people.
what is a deficit? when the government spends more money then it takes in.
What were “runs” on banks? They were when depositors panicked and tried to take all of their money out of the banks.
What does it mean for workers to go on strike? To refusing to work to get better working conditions.
Why did the Supreme Court rule against some of Roosevelt’s programs? Because they thought it gave the federal government more power.
What idea is capitalism based on? People who invest in a business should get most of its profits.
What is a drought? It is a a long period of dry weather.
What was the nickname given to the Great Plains? What was it called after the drought? It was called America's Breadbasket but it's now called the dust bowl.
Which state did many families move to after losing everything in the dust storms? California was the state that most families moved.
Why didn’t FDR support African Americans during his first term as president? Because he didn't want to lose political support in the south.
What is a hobo? They are homeless people that traveled illegally to find jobs
What were the differences between country schools and schools in cities? Schools in cities had few teachers and bought less books. Country schools were just one classroom and they had untrained teachers
What is one way African Americans experienced discrimination during the depression? White people in Atlanta got twice as much money as black people.
How did the girls in the Secret Helpers Club help people? They bought soup and bread and put it on the porch of a poor family’s house.
What were the two main sources of entertainment for families during the depression? Movies and radios.
How did Hitler become popular in Germany? Because he blamed Germany’s troubles on Jews
What is war production? Making weapons and other materials for the military.
Why was FDR getting elected in 1940 special? Because he is the first and only president to serve 3 terms.
What is one way that the New Deal helped America? The Tennessee Valley Authority built a series of dams to control floods.
How did women help during war time? Woman helped by taking jobs in the important war industries.
Which superhero was created during the Great Depression? Superman was created.
