Stalemate: in which neither side holds a clear path to a final victory - essentially a tie
Emancipation / Emancipated: to be freed
Emancipation Proclamation: declared that all enslaved people in the Confederate states that were in rebellion were free starting January 1st, 1863
Executive Order: written instruments (orders / proclamations / declarations) through which a President can issue directives (laws / acts / etc.) to shape policy
Union: Northern states, making up the United States of America
Confederacy: Southern states that broke away from the Union after Lincoln was elected
Enlist: to join (ex. enlisting in the Union army = joining the Union army)
Segregation: the act of keeping groups of people apart from each other
Barred: stopped / not allowed
