Appalachian Mountains The large mountain range system in the eastern United States stretching from Georgia to Maine.
Mount Mitchell The highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains and the tallest point east of the Mississippi River.
Appalachian Trail The namesake hiking trail that runs over 2,000 miles from Springer Mountain to Mount Katahdin.
Mount Katahdin The highest mountain in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
Springer Mountain The mountain in Georgia that serves as the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
Blue Ridge Mountains A subrange of the Appalachians known for a bluish haze and running through the southern section.
Great Smoky Mountains A national park on the NC-TN border known for its namesake fog and diverse salamander species.
Clingmans Dome The highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains, recently renamed to its Cherokee name, Kuwohi.
New River Gorge The deepest and longest river gorge in the Appalachians, located in West Virginia.
Anthracite Coal The hard, high-carbon coal found in massive deposits in the Pennsylvania section of the range.
Melungeons A mixed-race people group traditionally living in the southern Appalachian region.
White Mountains A subrange in New Hampshire home to Mount Washington and notorious for extreme wind speeds.
Mount Washington The peak in New Hampshire famous for holding the world record for the highest wind speed observed by man.
Appalachian Dulcimer A plucked string instrument unique to the cultural region, often used in bluegrass music.
Cumberland Gap A pass through the range blazed by Daniel Boone, used by early settlers to travel west.
