Literary Terms List

TermDefinition
Irony Irony is when something happens that is different from what we expect or from what it seems to mean.
Situational Irony Situational irony happens when the outcome of a situation is the opposite of what is expected.
Verbal Irony Verbal irony is when someone says one thing but means the opposite (often sarcastic).
Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony happens when the reader or audience knows something that the character does not.
Mood Mood is the feeling or emotion a reader gets while reading a story.
Tone Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject or characters.
Theme The theme is the big idea or message the author wants readers to learn about life or people.
Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is when an author gives hints or clues about what will happen later in the story.
Suspense Suspense is the feeling of excitement or tension that makes the reader want to keep reading.
Flashback A flashback is when a story goes back in time to show an event that happened earlier.
Event An event is something that happens in a story.
Series (of Events) A series is a group of connected events that happen in a specific order in a story.
