| Irony | Irony is when something happens that is different from what we expect or from what it seems to mean. |
| Situational Irony | Situational irony happens when the outcome of a situation is the opposite of what is expected. |
| Verbal Irony | Verbal irony is when someone says one thing but means the opposite (often sarcastic). |
| Dramatic Irony | Dramatic irony happens when the reader or audience knows something that the character does not. |
| Mood | Mood is the feeling or emotion a reader gets while reading a story. |
| Tone | Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject or characters. |
| Theme | The theme is the big idea or message the author wants readers to learn about life or people. |
| Foreshadowing | Foreshadowing is when an author gives hints or clues about what will happen later in the story. |
| Suspense | Suspense is the feeling of excitement or tension that makes the reader want to keep reading. |
| Flashback | A flashback is when a story goes back in time to show an event that happened earlier. |
| Event | An event is something that happens in a story. |
| Series (of Events) | A series is a group of connected events that happen in a specific order in a story. |
