| summary | a short explanation of the most important parts of a text |
| inference | a conclusion reached using evidence and reasoning |
| context clues | hints in a sentence or paragraph that help define a word |
| author’s purpose | the reason an author writes (to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain) |
| point of view | the perspective from which a story or text is told |
| claim | a statement or argument the author wants readers to accept |
| evidence | facts, examples, or details that support a claim |
| counterclaim | an opposing argument to the author’s claim |
| tone | the author’s attitude toward the subject or audience |
| mood | the feeling a reader gets while reading a text |
| figurative language | language that is not meant to be taken literally |
| simile | a comparison using “like” or “as” |
| metaphor | a direct comparison between two unlike things |
| personification | giving human traits to nonhuman things |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration used for effect |

| cause and effect | a relationship where one event makes another happen |
| compare and contrast | examining similarities and differences between ideas or topics |
| central conflict | the main problem or struggle in a story |
| characterization | the methods used to describe a character’s personality and traits |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| setting | the time and place in which a story occurs |
| symbolism | when an object or idea represents something deeper |
| bias | prejudice or favoritism that affects fairness or objectivity |
| credible source | a trustworthy and reliable source of information |
| paraphrase | restating information in your own words |
| citation | information showing where evidence or information came from |
| rhetorical question | a question asked for effect rather than to receive an answer |
| analogy | a comparison used to explain an idea |
| connotation | the emotional or cultural meaning connected to a word |
