The middle ages

QuestionAnswer
Apprentice A beginner or learner who works for a skilled master to learn a specific trade or craft. In the Middle Ages, young people would agree to work for a master in exchange for learning valuable skills and receiving support.
Black Death/Bubonic Plague A deadly disease caused by bacteria spread by fleas from infected rats. The illness caused high fever, weakness, and swollen glands, and killed millions of people during the Middle Ages.
Chivalry A code of behavior expected of knights, emphasizing fairness, courtesy, respect, and protection of those who are weaker.
Clergy Church officials who have religious responsibilities and leadership roles.
Coat of Arms A special symbol used to identify and represent noble families, often displayed on shields or buildings.
Crusade Military expeditions organized by Christian countries to recover the Holy Land from Muslim control during the 11th-13th centuries.
Feudalism A social system where land and protection were exchanged between different levels of society, from kings to nobles to peasants.
Fief Land given to a vassal by a lord in exchange for service and loyalty.
Guild An organized group of merchants, artisans, and craft workers who set standards for quality and pricing.
Holy Land The Holy Land refers to the area around Palestine that holds great religious significance for Jews, Christians, and Muslims
Knight A trained horseman who fought for a king or lord, typically from a noble family.
Lord The second in order in the feudal world, a noble who owned less land than the king and was loyal to the king
Manor A large, self-sufficient estate owned by a noble family where peasants worked and lived.
Medieval The term "medieval" is commonly used to describe things related to the Middle Ages.
Middle Ages The name given to the time period between 800 and 1400 C.E.
Monastery A community where monks lived, worked, and practiced their religious beliefs.
Monk A man who was dedicated to his religion and lived in an isolated community.
Peasant Free people who lived and worked on the land, providing crops and services to the lord in exchange for protection.
Serf A person who was not free and was tied to the land, working for the landowner with very few personal rights.
Vassal A person who served a lord in exchange for land and protection.
