QuestionAnswer
Name four types of motion and explain and give an example Linear- straight line motion e.g a train Rotary- circular direction motion e.g a wheel Oscillating- motion from one side to another e.g a swing Reciprocating- repeated motion along a straight line e.g scroll saw
How do you calculate gear ratio Number of teeth on driver gear/ number of teeth on driven gear
What’s a mechanism A device that changes input motion to a desired output motion
What’s a compound gear A smaller and larger gear on the same shaft. This allows for greater variety for speed
What’s a gear train A gear I between two gears allow for both gears to run in the same direction
Chain and sprocket Two gears meshed on a chain to prevent slipping e.g a bike
How do you calculate mechanical advantage Load/effort
Pulley and wheel A belt tensioned between two pulley wheels that requires no lubricants but can slip easier
Fulcrum, load and effort Fulcrum- a fixed pivot point Effort- the force used to move around the fulcrum Load - the weight being moved
Name three types of screw heads Flat Pozi Phillips
Adhesives Permanent jointing like glues used to join materials
Loads What structures are designed to carry
Explain the two types of loads Dynamic - moving loads that vary in intensity e.g car over a bridge vs a truck Static - loads that don’t move and are constant e.g a roof on a building
Strut A member of a structure under compression
Tie A member of a structure under tension
Torsion A turning force placed on a member e.g screwdriver
Shear A sliding force placed on a member e.g scissors
Compression A pushing/ squeezing force applied on a member e.g vice
Tension A pulling force applied on a member e.g hacksaw blades
Triangulation A method of building structures as triangles naturally are stronger
Framed structure A structure where pieces are joined together like a skeleton to make a strong yet lightweight structure
What are three types of bridges Suspension bridge- bridges that are hung below powerful wires on vertical suspenders Arch bridge - bridges that takes compression under the bridge Cable stayed bridge- like a suspension bridge but all loads are placed on a single tower
What’s a double pull double throw relay It’s a relay that can switch between two states whilst still being turned on
What’s a relay An electronically operated switch that can turn low peer inputs into high power outputs
What’s a limit switch A switch that automatically stops movement to prevent unnecessary movement. Usually used in parking gates.
What’s a led A light emitting diode. Uses very little electricity to light up
What’s a speaker Turns electricity into sound
Dc motor vs geared dc motor Dc motor rotates fast while a geared dc motor rotates with more torque
Transistor Amplifies current in a circuit
Diode Forces currents to flow in one direction
Capacitor Smoothly releases a small electric charge

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
