What is a business process (BP)? A series of tasks, activities, or steps designed to produce a product or service
What are the 4 components of a business process? Activities, resources, facilities, and information
What are activities in a business process? Tasks or actions that can be manual, automated, or both
What are resources in a business process? Items of value such as employees, cash, customers, or inventory
What are facilities in a business process? Structures where resources are stored or processes occur such as factories, trucks, filing cabinets, or databases
What is the role of information in a business process? Information helps determine how inputs are transformed into outputs
What is information in this course? Knowledge derived from data
What is data? Recorded facts or figures
What is the difference between data and information? Data is raw facts while information is processed data presented in a meaningful context
Example of data vs information Anne earns $70/hr and Freeda earns $80/hr is data while the average salary of $75/hr is information
What does it mean that information is “a difference that makes a difference”? Information should improve understanding or decision-making
What qualities should good information have? Accurate, timely, relevant, just sufficient, and worth its cost
How is information created in business processes? By collecting, processing, and comparing data
Why is information important in business processes? It supports monitoring, planning, and decision-making
What is Business Process Management (BPM)? The process of generating information useful for management and strategic decisions
What is the starting point for decision-making? Information
What are the 3 levels of business decisions? Operational, managerial, and strategic decisions
What are operational decisions? Short-term day-to-day decisions
Example of an operational decision How many items should be ordered from a supplier?
What systems support operational decisions? Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)
What are managerial decisions? Decisions about allocating and using resources
Example of a managerial decision How much should be budgeted for computers next year?
What systems support managerial decisions? Management Information Systems (MIS)
What are strategic decisions? Long-term decisions involving broader organizational issues
Example of a strategic decision Should the company launch a new product line?
What is a structured decision? A decision with an accepted method or formula for making it
Example of a structured decision Calculating reorder quantities for inventory
What is an unstructured decision? A decision with no agreed-upon decision-making process
Example of an unstructured decision Predicting the future economy
How do information systems support decision-making? They collect, process, and organize information from business processes
What does TPS stand for? Transaction Processing Systems
What does MIS stand for? Management Information Systems
What is the purpose of TPS? To support operational decision-making
What is the purpose of MIS? To support managerial decision-making
Why are business processes important? They help organizations efficiently produce goods and services
Can business process activities be automated? Yes, activities can be manual, automated, or both
What is an example of facilities in a business process? Factories, trucks, filing cabinets, or databases
