What is mythology? A collection of traditional stories that explain a culture’s beliefs, origins, and natural events, often involving gods or supernatural beings.
What are the main types of myths? Creation myths, hero myths, trickster myths, and explanatory (nature) myths
What is a creation myth? A story that explains how the world or humans were created.
What is a hero myth? A story about a hero who goes on a journey or completes a great task.
What is a trickster myth? A story about a clever character who uses wit to outsmart others.
What are common characteristics of myths? Supernatural elements, gods or goddesses, explanation of nature, moral lessons, cultural values.
Name major mythological figures. Zeus, Athena, Thor, Loki, Poseidon, Hades
What makes a source credible? Author expertise, reliable publisher, evidence provided, recent information, lack of bias.
What is Character vs. Character conflict? When one character struggles against another.
What are the four types within Character vs. Character? Process, Task, Status, Relationship.
What is Character vs. Nature? A character struggles against natural forces such as weather, animals, or disasters.
What is Character vs. Self? A character struggles with their own thoughts or emotions.
What is Character vs. Society (World)? A character struggles against societal rules or expectations.
What is Character vs. Technology? A character struggles against machines or technology.
What is Character vs. Supernatural? A character struggles against ghosts, gods, or magical forces.
What is a memoir? A personal story focusing on specific events or moments in a person’s life.
What is an autobiography? A full life story written by the person themselves.
Key difference between memoir and autobiography? A memoir focuses on specific moments, while an autobiography covers an entire life.
How do you format dialogue correctly? Use quotation marks, commas, capitalization, and new paragraphs for new speakers.
What is revising? Improving ideas, structure, and clarity.
What is editing? Fixing grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
What are Signposts in reading? Clues authors use to help readers understand deeper meaning.
Name the main signposts Contrasts and Contradictions, Aha Moment, Tough Questions, Words of the Wiser, Again and Again, Memory Moment.
What is figurative language? Language that uses comparisons or exaggeration to create meaning.
What is a simile? A comparison using like or as.
What is a metaphor? A direct comparison without like or as.
What is hyperbole? An exaggeration for effect.
What is onomatopoeia? Words that imitate sounds.
What is personification? Giving human traits to non-human things.
What is plagiarism? Using someone else’s work without giving credit.
How do you avoid plagiarism? Cite sources, paraphrase properly, and use quotations.
What is rhyme scheme? The pattern of rhymes in a poem such as ABAB.
What should you identify in poetry? Rhyme scheme, figurative language, tone, and structure.
What are key elements of a mystery? Detective, clues, suspects, red herrings, and solution.
What is a red herring? A misleading clue meant to confuse the reader.
