Female Reproductive System Group of organs and structures responsible for reproduction, pregnancy, childbirth, and nourishment of a baby.
Ovary Female reproductive organ that produces ova (eggs), estrogen, and progesterone.
Ovum (Ova) Female sex cell, also called an egg.
Gametes Reproductive sex cells.
Follicles Fluid-filled sacs in the ovaries where ova mature.
Ovulation Release of a mature ovum from the ovary.
Conception/Fertilization Fusion of a sperm and ovum to form a zygote.
Zygote Fertilized ovum formed after conception.
Pituitary Gland Endocrine gland that releases hormones controlling ovary function.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Hormone that stimulates ovum production and estrogen release.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Hormone involved in ovulation and menstrual cycle regulation.
Menstruation Monthly shedding of the uterine lining.
Estrogen Female hormone involved in puberty and menstrual cycle regulation.
Progesterone Hormone that helps regulate menstruation and supports pregnancy.
Fallopian Tubes Tubes that transport ova from the ovaries to the uterus.
Fimbriae Finger-like projections that guide the ovum into the fallopian tube.
Peristalsis Rhythmic muscle contractions that help move the ovum through the tube.
Cilia Tiny hair-like structures that help move the ovum toward the uterus.
Uterus Hollow muscular organ where the embryo and fetus develop.
Fundus Upper rounded portion of the uterus.
Embryo Developing human from implantation until the eighth week after conception.
Fetus Developing human from the ninth week until birth.
Gestation Period of development in the uterus from conception to birth.
Cervix Lower narrow portion of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
Effacement Thinning of the cervix during labor.
Dilation Opening of the cervix during labor.
Perimetrium Outer layer of the uterus.
Myometrium Thick muscular middle layer of the uterus.
Endometrium Inner lining of the uterus shed during menstruation.
Vagina Muscular canal that receives sperm and serves as the birth canal.
Hymen Thin membrane partially covering the vaginal opening.
Vulva External female genital structures.
Mons Pubis Fatty area over the pubic bone where pubic hair grows.
Labia Majora Outer folds of skin protecting the vulva.
Labia Minora Inner folds of skin protecting the vaginal opening.
Vestibule Area containing the urethral and vaginal openings.
Greater Vestibular (Bartholin’s) Glands Glands that secrete mucus to lubricate the vagina.
Clitoris Erectile tissue structure involved in sexual arousal.
Mammary Glands Glands in the breasts that produce milk.
Lobes Divisions within the mammary glands.
Lobules Smaller glands within lobes that produce milk.
Lactiferous Ducts Tubes carrying milk to the nipple.
Areola Dark-colored area surrounding the nipple.
Colostrum First nutrient-rich fluid produced after childbirth.
Pregnancy Period between conception and birth.
Blastocyst Early stage of the developing fertilized egg before implantation.
Placenta Organ that provides nutrients and oxygen to the fetus.
Umbilical Cord Cord connecting the fetus to the placenta.
Chorion Outer fetal membrane contributing to placenta formation.
Amnion Inner membrane containing amniotic fluid.
Amniotic Fluid Protective fluid surrounding the fetus.
Labor Process of childbirth.
Contractions Rhythmic tightening of uterine muscles during labor.
Crowning Appearance of the baby’s head during birth.
Breech Birth Birth in which the baby emerges feet- or buttocks-first.
Parturition Another term for childbirth.
Monozygotic Twins Identical twins formed from one fertilized ovum splitting.
Dizygotic Twins Fraternal twins formed from two separate ova fertilized by two sperm.
Trimester One of the three stages of pregnancy, each lasting about three months.
