P-Diabetic

Indications Patients with decreased LOC whose history suggests hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia
Contraindications Glucagon – Hypersensitivity, Pheochromocytoma, Insulinoma, Intranasal Glucagon is contraindicated in patients under 4 years of age.
Cautions Monitor closely for airway complications
What does attendant do before obtaining BGL? Complete primary survey, attempt complete history and delegate vitals starting with BGL and GCS.
What does attendant do after obtaining BGL? If BGL is less than 4mmol/L administer either 15g of oral glucose if the patient is able to maintain their airway and obey commands if unable roll 3/4 prone and administer 1 mg of Glucagon IM. Transport after administering first dose.
What should attendant do during your continued assessment and treatment? If no improvements within 5 minutes, repeat BGL test and if ≤4.0mmol/L, give Oral Glucose q5. No Max dosage for Oral Glucose.
What should you do if there are no improvements after treatment? Consider other causes/treatment if no improvement. Consider other causes of unconsciousness (AEIOUTRIPS) and contact EPOS for further orders.
What does partner/driver do? Obtain baseline set of vitals starting with BGL and GCS. Administer O2, prepare the cot.
