Angles Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| angle | the shape made when 2 rays start at the same point and move in different directions |
| vertex | the common point where 2 angles meet (when naming an angle this letter goes in the middle) |
| rays | the sides of the angles |
| right angle | an angle that is exactly 90 degrees (like the corner of a square) |
| acute angle | an angle with a measurement less than 90 degrees |
| obtuse angle | an angle with a measurement more than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees |
| straight angle | an angle with a measurement of exactly 180 degrees, forming a straight line |
| complementary angles | angles whose measurements add up to 90 degrees (the sum forms a right angle) |
| supplementary angles | angles whose measurements add up to 180 degrees (the sum forms a straight angle) |
| adjacent angles | 2 angles who share a side and have a common vertex (next door neighbors) |
| vertical angles | 2 opposite angles formed by the intersection of 2 lines - they form congruent angles (have the same measurement) |
| congruent angles | angles with the same measurement |
| transversal | a line that intersects 2 or more lines |
| parallel lines | lines that never cross/intersect (symbol - //) |
| corresponding angles | angles that match up and are congruent (the top angles can slide down to match the bottom) |
| alternate interior angles | diagonal angles on the inside of the parallel lines (they are congruent - the same measurement) |
| alternate exterior angles | diagonal angles on the outside of the parallel lines (they are congruent - the same measurement) |
