Atomic Adventures

Unit 7 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Atom Smallest unit of matter
Mixture 2 or more substances blended together physically
Homogeneous Evenly blended and usually has a ratio or proportion of substances either by mass or volume
Heterogeneous Made of visibly different particles
Proton Found in nucleus. Positive Charge. Mass of 1amu
Electron Cloud Current Theory of an atom. We can only predict possible location of electrons because they move so fast.
Filtration Using filter paper or sieves to separate based on size
Isotope Version of the same element. Only has different numbers of neutrons.
Electron Found outside nucleus. Negative Charge. No mass.
Element A pure substance made up of only 1 kind of atom
Evaporation Letting a liquid change to a gas. For faster results you can also boil off non-flammable liquids.
Neutral (atom) Atom has no charge (equal number of protons and electrons)
Neutron Found in nucleus. No Charge. Mass of 1amu.
Compound 2 or more elements combined chemically in a defined ratio.
Magnetism Magnets to attract magnetic substances like iron, cobalt and nickel
Atomic Weight Number of protons plus neutrons in an atom.
Atomic Number Always tells you number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Bond Chemical Connections between atoms in a compound
Ratio Chemical formulas show how many of each atom are in a compound.
Group Vertical Columns on Periodic Table
Period Horizontal Rows on Periodic Table
Pure Substances Substance made of only 1 kind of particle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
