A-Level Greek

Histories Book 7: 220

TermDefinition
λέγεται δὲ καὶ ὡς αὐτός σφεας ἀπέπεμψε Λεωνίδης, μὴ ἀπόλωνται κηδόμενος· And it is said that Leonidas himself sent them away, being anxious that they would perish;
But (he thought) that it was appropriate for himself and those of the Spartans who were present to leave the position which they had initially come to defend.
ταύτῃ καὶ μᾶλλον τὴν γνώμην πλεῖστος εἰμί, Λεωνίδην, ἐπείτε ᾔσθετο τοὺς συμμάχους ἐόντας ἀπροθύμους καὶ οὐκ ἐθέλοντας συνδιακινδυνεύειν, I am also rather inclined to this opinion, that when Leonidas perceived that the allies were unready and not willing to share in the danger,
He ordered them to depart, but (he said that) it was not honourable for him to go away; and great glory would be left (for him) if he stayed here, and the prosperity of Sparta would not be wiped out.
ἐκέχρηστο γὰρ ὑπὸ τῆς Πυθίης τοῖσι Σπαρτιήτῃσι χρεωμένοισι περὶ τοῦ πολέμου τούτου αὐτίκα κατ᾽ ἀρχὰς ἐγειρομένου, For it had been proclaimed by the Pythia to the Spartans when they consulted her about this war right at the start when it was breaking out,
That either Sparta would be destroyed by the barbarians or their king would perish. And these things were proclaimed to them in hexameter verses like this:
"O' inhabitants of Sparta with its open spaces, either your great and glorious city will be sacked by men who are descendants of Perseus, or not, but then it will mourn a dead king, a guardian of Sparta, from the race of Heracles.
For the strength of bulls or lions will not hold him back (when you come) face-to-face; for he has the strength of Zeus; and I say that he will not be held back until he has completely torn one of them apart."
ταῦτά τε δὴ ἐπιλεγόμενον Λεωνίδην καὶ βουλόμενον κλέος καταθέσθαι μούνων Σπαρτιητέων, I think that Leonidas thought about these things and wanted to store up glory for the Spartans alone,
So he sent the allies away rather than for the men who left to leave in such a disorderly way, after differing in opinion.
