TermDefinition
ALARA concept of radiation protection that states all exposures should be kept “as low as reasonably achievable
Cathode negative electrode in the x-ray tube
Density overall darkness or blackness of an image.
Focusing cup A negative charged shallow metal depression within the cathode of an x-ray tube that houses the filament.
Silver halide crystals absorb radiation during x-ray exposure and store energy emitted from the radiation
Kilovoltage kVp highest voltage of x-ray tube used during an exposure
Latent period/image time between exposure to ionizing radiation and appearance of image
Milliamperage one one-thousandth (1/1000) of an ampere; a unit of measurement used to describe the intensity of an electrical current.
Primary radiation most penetrating beam produced at the target of the anode
Radiolucent image refers to structures that are less dense and permits the x-ray beam to pass through causing the images to appear dark or black.
Radiolucent , examples Air, fat, soft tissues, and some types of infections or tumors in bones depressions, cavities, or openings in bone, like the sinus, canal, or foramen
Scatter radiation form of secondary radiation that occurs when an x-ray beam has been deflected from its path by interaction with matter
Secondary radiation x-radiation that is created when the primary beam interacts with matter
X-ray a common, fast, and painless imaging test that use a small amount of electromagnetic radiation to create images of the inside of the body
bisecting technique intraoral technique of exposing dental images where the x-ray beam is directed, perpendicular to an imaginary line which bisects the angle.
cone-cutting a common dental radiography error where part of the image receptor (film or sensor) is not exposed to the radiation beam, appearing as a clear or white, curved/straight border on the image
elongation the teeth appear too long
foreshortening the teeth appear too short
Ionization process by which electrons are removed from atoms, causing the harmful effects of radiation in humans.
Radiopaque mages are structures that are dense and resist the passage of radiation causing the image to appear light or white depending on the density
Radiopaque examples bone, amalgam fillings, implants, and braces.
Cephalometric radiograph a specialized side-view X-ray of the head used mainly in orthodontics to capture detailed images of teeth, jawbones, and soft tissues
Digital image electronic signals captured by sensors and displayed on computer monitors

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
