In Act I Scene 1 of The Diary of Anne Frank, Mr. Frank’s voice overlaps with Anne’s as he opens and begins reading her diary. What is the purpose of this device? With their voices overlapping, the audience understands that there is a flashback to an earlier time when Anne was alive.
