Explain the US foreign policy of containment during the Cold War. What were we trying to contain? Trying to contain communism
Explain the Domino Theory. Give an example of when the US got involved in a conflict during the Cold War because of the fear of the domino theory If one country became communists then other countries would fall to communism too. The US got involved in the Vietnam war - feared that if Vietnam became fully communists then countries in Asia would also become communist
Which two countries “fought” the Cold War? What were their different political ideologies? US + Soviet Union - US supported democracy and capitalism, people vote - SU supported communism, government controlled
Explain the Bay of Pigs invasion. Why did the US want to do this? What was the outcome of the invasion? Failed attempt by the US to overthrow Castro (Cuba) The US wanted to remove Castro bc he was allied with the SU + brought communism close to the US. The CIA trained cuban exiles to invade cuba. Castro's forces defeated invaders.
Explain what happened in the Cuban missile crisis. What was at stake and what was the outcome? US discovered missiles in Cuba, SU secretly placed them there. US made blockade around Cuba, both sides faced off with military forces. Outcome - crisis ended peacefully -SU agreed to remove missiles if US removed missiles from Turkey + didn't invade cuba
Explain how the Korean War started and how it ended. Was there any change and why did the US want to get involved? started when NK invaded SK. US joined to contain communism. ended with Armistice. Korea stayed divided into NK + SK.
Why did the US want to get involved in the Vietnam War? What was the outcome of the Vietnam War? US wanted to contain communism, US feared domino theory. NV defeated SV -country was united under communist control. outcome -US withdrew its troops, not succeeding in their main goal
How did the Cold War end? SU collapsed. Vietnam is now reunited under communism
Explain why and how Germany was divided after WWII. Include the Yalta Conference and Potsdam Conference in your answer. split to prevent Germany from becoming a military threat + manage political differences between the SU + Western allies. tensions grew between the two in CW, split into W+E Germany. Yalta-agree to split. Potsdam-decide Germany would be demilitarized
Compare and contrast the Korean and Vietnam War. both split, contain com, tensions with SU, conflicts involving US Korean ended stalemate - Vietnam=com victory , Korea=divided - Vietnam=reunited , K lasted 3 years - v lasted 20, v =17 - k=38
Explain the US battle strategy and the VietCong battle strategy during the Vietnam War. US - bombing/airstrikes, search + destroy, agent orange, napalm Vietcong - Ho Chi Minh trail, tunnels, punji pits, booby traps
What is the Truman Doctrine? How does it relate to the cold war? US would support countries threatened by communism with economic and military aid. relates bc starts containing communism
What is the Berlin Blockade? How does it relate to the cold war? US put ships around cuba, SU defeats invaders, SU takes missiles down if US takes missiles down in Turkey and doesn't invade cuba anymore
What is the Berlin Wall? How does it relate to the cold war? wall built to divide east + West Berlin, no escaping from east (c) to west (d) relates bc - division between communism and capitalism, SU blocked access to West Berlin , split East + West Berlin. created Berlin airlift, to transport supplies into the west
