| Target cell | A cell that can be affected by a certain hormone as it has specific receptors |
| Receptor | A structure/molecule on a target cell that hormones can attach to |
| Homeostasis | The body's ability to maintain a stable state |
| Negative feedback | When a change in a variable (eg. blood glucose) causes another change to counteract or reverse the change and maintain homeostasis |
| Pituitary gland | A gland in the brain that controls the other endocrine glands |
| Thyroid gland | A gland in the neck that controls growth and normal body function |
| Adrenal glands | Glands found on the kidney that initiate the fight or flight response |
| Pancreas | Gland found in the abdomen that releases insulin and glucagon to regulate blood glucose levels |
| Pineal gland | Gland found in the brain, that regulates sleep cycles and daily both rhythms |
| Hypothalamus | Gland in the brain which links the nervous and endocrine systems. It tells the pituitary gland when to release hormones. It controls many functions like hunger, thirst, temperature, emotion |
