Endocrine system

Endocrine System A communication system that uses chemical messengers called hormones to control and coordinate the body
Processes coordinated by the endocrine system growth, development, puberty, metabolism, mood, emotions, sleep, reproduction, stress response, immune function
Gland an organ that secretes a chemical substance
Target cell A cell that can be affected by a certain hormone as it has specific receptors
Receptor A structure/molecule on a target cell that hormones can attach to
Homeostasis The body's ability to maintain a stable state
Negative feedback When a change in a variable (eg. blood glucose) causes another change to counteract or reverse the change and maintain homeostasis
Pituitary gland A gland in the brain that controls the other endocrine glands
Thyroid gland A gland in the neck that controls growth and normal body function
Adrenal glands Glands found on the kidney that initiate the fight or flight response
Pancreas Gland found in the abdomen that releases insulin and glucagon to regulate blood glucose levels
Pineal gland Gland found in the brain, that regulates sleep cycles and daily both rhythms
Hypothalamus Gland in the brain which links the nervous and endocrine systems. It tells the pituitary gland when to release hormones. It controls many functions like hunger, thirst, temperature, emotion
