| French and Indian War | War between France and England over land in the Ohio River Valley. Also known as the “Seven Year War”. England won the war but ended up in debt. |
| King George III | English king that ruled over the colonies during the time of the American Revolution.. |
| No Taxation Without Representation | Phrase some colonists used to show they were upset because they wanted to have a say in Parliament and the new taxes |
| Sugar, Stamp, Tea Act | The British taxed the colonists on items they used frequently to pay off their debt for the French and Indian War including sugar, paper products and tea. |
| Sons of Liberty | One of the groups of colonists that protested against the British. Their actions helped lead to the American Revolution. |
| British Troops in Boston | England began to send troops to the colonies after raising taxes to keep the peace. |
| Boston Massacre | A small crowd of colonists began taunting British soldiers. A larger crowd formed and a fight broke out between the two sides. |
| Parliament | The name for the British government. |
| Boston Tea Party | As a way to protest the tea tax, patriots sneaked aboard a ship in Boston and through crates of tea in the harbor. |
| Intolerable Acts | The British created a series of laws that upset the colonists after the Boston Tea Party. Some patriots referred to them as intolerable. |
| Bias | The way we view things or perceive the way it is supposed to be even if it is not accurate. |
| Boycott | Refusal to buy goods. |
| Blockade | One of the “Intolerable Acts” was that the British made it difficult to enter and leave Boston because they lined up their ships to block off the entry points. |
| Quartering | Colonists were required to house British soldiers |
| Loyalists | Someone living in the colonies that sided with the British. |
| Patriots | Colonists that supported the idea of independence from Great Britain. |
| Declaration of Independence | Was the document that declared the 13 colonies independent from Great Britain. Signed on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, PA (Independence Hall). |
| Thomas Jefferson | Was an author of the Declaration of Independence. |
| Battle of Lexington and Concord | first battle of the revolution also had Paul Revere’s midnight ride to warn that British troops were on their way to seize colonists weapons. |
| Militia | A group of citizen soldiers that protect a community.. |
