Air Mass large section of air with similar temperature and humidity
Continental air mass formed over land
Polar air mass formed over a cold region
Maritime air mass formed over water
Tropical air mass formed over a warm region
collection the process in which water is stored in lakes, rivers, oceans, and icebergs
evaporation the process in which liquid water turns into a gas (water vapor)
condensation Water vapor cools down and turns into small droplets that form clouds
precipitation Water falls (in any form) to the ground from clouds
runoff Water flows across the surface of earth, eventually forming streams and rivers
infiltration Water is absorbed into the ground
humidity a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air
air pressure the weight of air molecules pressing down on the Earth
front the boundary between two air masses
type of precipitation at warm front steady
type of precipitation at cold front intense
force that pushes air masses around wind
lake effect snow formed when cold air flows over warm lakes
hurricane large storm formed over warm oceans with high winds, rain, and storm surge
tornado during a large thunderstorm when a very warm and a very cold air mass collide, causing a spiral of extreme winds
thermometer tool used to measure temperature
barometer tool used to measure air pressure
rain gauge tool used to measure the amount of precipitation
