| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Air Mass | large section of air with similar temperature and humidity |
| Continental | air mass formed over land |
| Polar | air mass formed over a cold region |
| Maritime | air mass formed over water |
| Tropical | air mass formed over a warm region |
| collection | the process in which water is stored in lakes, rivers, oceans, and icebergs |
| evaporation | the process in which liquid water turns into a gas (water vapor) |
| condensation | Water vapor cools down and turns into small droplets that form clouds |
| precipitation | Water falls (in any form) to the ground from clouds |
| runoff | Water flows across the surface of earth, eventually forming streams and rivers |
| infiltration | Water is absorbed into the ground |
| humidity | a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air |
| air pressure | the weight of air molecules pressing down on the Earth |
| front | the boundary between two air masses |
| type of precipitation at warm front | steady |
| type of precipitation at cold front | intense |
| force that pushes air masses around | wind |
| lake effect snow | formed when cold air flows over warm lakes |
| hurricane | large storm formed over warm oceans with high winds, rain, and storm surge |
| tornado | during a large thunderstorm when a very warm and a very cold air mass collide, causing a spiral of extreme winds |
| thermometer | tool used to measure temperature |
| barometer | tool used to measure air pressure |
| rain gauge | tool used to measure the amount of precipitation |
