Newton's first law
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Balanced force | Forces acting on an object that combine and form a net force of zero |
| Net force | The combination of all forces acting on an object |
| Reference direction | Because forces have direction, you have to specify a reference direction when you combine forces |
| Direction | When forces are applied to an object, they act in the same direction; the net force is the same as the direction of individual forces |
| inertia | The tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion |
| Unbalanced Forces | Forces acting on an object that combine and form a net force that is not zero |
| Inertia and Car | As an object is in motion, it tends to want to stay in motion. When a car breaks, the people lung forward due to inertia, which is why seat belts exist. |
| Velocity, balanced forces and Newton’s first law | Balanced forces cause no changes in an object’s velocity; this is true when an object is at rest or in motion. |
| Unbalanced forces and motion | Newton’s first law of Motion only applies to balanced forces acting on an object |
