TermDefinition
Henry VIII Major figure of reformation he was the king of England from 1509-1547 he wanted a male heir to succeed him after his wife could not give this to him so he wanted a divorce, so he became the head of a new church in England
Counter Reformation The Roman Catholic Church used this to fight against the protestant attacks
Martin Luther A monk who lived in the Holy Roman Empire he concluded that several traditional church practices violated biblical teachings, so he fought against them
Predestined Determined before birth if one would get to heaven
Indulgences Sold by the Catholic Church to the wealthy people they were told that it would bring them to heaven quicker when the time came
Inquisition A court that had been established in the late 12th century in punished nonbelievers of the church sometimes in forms of torture
95 theses Charges Martin Luther nailed to the door of the church this defiantly challenged the church
Protestant Reformation The various reform efforts it was a movement in the 1500s that tried to fix/reform the corruption in the Catholic Church
Simony The selling of church offices Martin Luther objected this
Jesuits /Society of Jesus a religious order that opposed the spread of Protestantism they undertook missionary activity throughout the Spanish empire as well as in Japan and India
John Calvin The French theologian broke w/ the catholic he was the author of "The institutes of the Christian Religion" and he helped reform the religious community in Geneva, Switzerland
Anglican Church Established by King Henry VIII who was also the head of this church of England it was free of control by the pope in Rome.
Holy Synod Established by Peter in place of the patriarch, he established it and it was composed of clergymen overseen by a secular official who answered to the Tsar
Council of Trent Corrected some of the worst of the Church's abuses and concentrated on reaffirming the rituals such as marriage. They also published the "Index of Prohibited Books" a list of writings that the church banned
Elect A group of people who run the community of Geneva, Switzerland they led a plain life
