| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to cause change |
| Kinetic Energy | energy due to motion |
| Potential energy | stored energy due to the interactions between objects and particles |
| Work | The transfer of energy that occurs when a force is applied over a distance |
| Mechanical energy | the total energy of an object or group of objects due to large scale motions and interactions |
| Sound energy | the energy that sound carries |
| thermal energy | energy due to motion of particles that make up an object |
| electric energy | the energy that an electric current carries |
| radiant energy | the energy the electromagnetic waves carry |
| nuclear energy | energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom |
| Law of conservation of energy | energy can be transformed form one another of transferred from one region to another, but energy cannot be created or destroyed |
| Friction | a force that resists the sliding of two surfaces that are touching |
| temperature | represents the average kinetic energy of the particles that make a material |
| Heat | the movement of the thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object |
| Wave | a disturbance that transfers energy form one place to another without transferring matter |
| Mechanical wave | a wave that can only travel through matter |
| Medium | a materiel in which a wave travels |
| Transverse wave | a wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels |
| Crest | the highest points on a transverse wave |
| Trough | the lowest points on a transverse wave |
| Longitudinal wave | a wave in which the disturbance is parallel to the direction the wave travels |
| Compressions | the regions of a longitudinal wave where the particles in the medium are close together |
| Rarefactions | the regions of a longitudinal wave where the particles are farthest apart |
| Electromagnetic waves | a wave that can travel through empty space and through matter |
| Amplitude | the maximum distance that the wave moves from its rest position. |
| Wavelength | the distance from one point to the same point on the next wave |
| Frequency | the number of wavelengths that pass a point each second |
