PDM Terms

Photographic and Digital Media Terms

TermDefinition
SHUTTER SPEED The time the lens open and is exposed to light. Measured in Seconds.
APERTURE The opening in a camera lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor.
DEPTH OF FIELD How far the camera can see before the image blurs.
FOCAL POINT Usually the main subject of a photograph. It is the spot of the photo that is well lit and in focus.
RULE OF THIRDS Imaginary lines that photographers use to create balance/ harmony in a photograph.
PORTRAIT A photograph of a person with the focal point being the eyes of the sitter/ main subject.
F STOP The number that indicates the aperture of the lens. Wide aperture = low number. Narrow aperture = high number.
ISO How sensitive the lens is to light. Higher number for low light environments. Lower number for well-lit environments.
GAZE The direction the main subject/ sitter is looking in a portrait photograph. e.g. Looking past the audience or looking directly at the audience.
