What is the atmosphere? The atmosphere is a mixture of gases that surround the Earth. ( the air.)
What is Nitrogen? Nitrogen is the most common atmospheric gas. It is released from volcanic eruptions and dead plants and animals. It is an essential component to life on Earth.
What is Oxygen? Oxygen is the second most common atmospheric gas. It is released by plants and breathe in by humans and animals.
What is the percentage of Nitrogen and Oxygen in the atmosphere? 78% of Nitrogen and 21% of Oxygen.
List the gases in the atmosphere in order. Nitrous Oxide, Hydrogen, Krypton, Methane, Helium, neon, Carbon Dioxide, Argon, Oxygen, Nitrogen.
What is air pressure? The measure of the force which air molecules push on a surface.
Air pressure is ______ at the surface. Higher.
As elevation increases air pressure _________. Decreases.
As water vapor increases air pressure _________. Decreases.
As temperatures rise air pressure _________. Decreases.
What is a barometer? A weather instrument used to measure air pressure.
What is the layer of the atmosphere that contains the Ozone layer? Stratosphere.
What are the two layers in the Thermosphere? Ionosphere and Exosphere.
List the layers of the atmosphere is order. Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere (Ionosphere and Exosphere.)
What is radiation? The transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves.
What is convection? The transfer is thermal energy by the circulation of movement of a liquid or gas.
What is thermal conduction? The transfer of energy as heat through a material.
What are global winds? Consistent air movements that flow around the Earth in predictable patterns
List the global wind bands in order. Polar easterlies, prevailing westerlies, trade winds, trade winds, prevailing westerlies, and polar easterlies.
What band is Maryland in? The prevailing westerlies.
What causes wind? Uneven heating, differences in air pressure, and Earth's rotation.
True or False. The smaller the temperature differences, the stronger the wind will be. False
True or False. Winds are named for the direction they are blowing toward. False
What are jet streams? Narrow belts of strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere.
What are winds named after? The direction or place from which they are blowing.
