what is an Blood borne pathogen? infectious microorganisms found in blood body fluids and tissues. EX are hep B hep C and HIV.
what's a reservoir? the source of an infectious agent (aka the host)
microorganisms can survive in what types of conditions? aerobic and anaerobic
what is the Portal of exit? pathway a microorganism uses to leave the reservoir, the microbes can exit the host via secretions like the eyes, nose mouth, open wound, etc.
what is the Means of transmission, what different types are there? Airborne-pathogen suspended in air. Contact: person to person physical transfer. Indirect-contact: with contaminated objects Droplet: sneezing, spitting, breathing enters thru nose eyes mouth .
What is the portal of entry? pathway a microorganism uses to enter a host. Common portals are body openings, mucus membranes, skin breaks
what is an susceptible host? : individuals with decreased ability to resist infections. Factors include age, health, immune status
what is the best way to stop the chain of infection? wash hands
how to break the chain: standard precautions? applies to all patients all the time, treat all as if infectious, PPE, gloves, safe sharps handling. This applies to blood, body fluids, non intact skin, mucous membranes.
when did universal precautions against disease begin (roughly) during the HIV epidemic
Transmission based precautions for droplets? surgical mask/gloves
transmission based precaution for airborne pathogens? N95 masks and gloves
