Unlocking atom vocab

Chem

Atoms The smallest unit of matter and the basic unit of matter that has no charge
Atomic number tells you the number of protons that define an element
Atomic mass Represents the average mass of an element Protons+neutrons
Atomic mass units how an isotope is measured
average atomic mass The weighted average mass
electron A subatomic particles with no mass and a negative charge
Ion an atom that becomes electrically charged by gaining or losing electrons
Ionic radius The radius of a charged particle
isotope atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different number of electrons
Neutrons particles with a mass of 1 but no charge
nucleus The center of an atom that holds the protons and neutrons
orbital the region around the nucleus where electrons are usually found
proton a particle with a mass of 1 and a positive charge
subatomic particle protons,neutrons and electrons
