9.4 arthropods

| Exoskeleton | A skeleton that forms the external surface of an animal, as in arthropods. |
| Pereopods | Paired legs in decapods. |
| Abdomen | The portion of a decapod body between the cephalothorax and the tail. |
| Pleopods | Specialized appendage beneath the body of a decapod, also “swimmeret.” |
| Molt | The exoskeleton that is shed during the molting process. |
| Maxillipeds | A food-sorting appendage of some crustaceans. |
| Antennae | A sensory appendage on the head of arthropods. |
| Nauplius | A planktonic larva of many crustaceans. |
| Carapace | The shield-like structure that covers the anterior portion of some crustaceans. The shell of sea turtles. |
| Cephalothorax | The anterior portion of the body of many arthropods, which consists of the head fused with other body segments. |
| Compound Eyes | An eye that consists of numerous light-sensitive units. |
