9.4 arthropods

TermDefinition
Exoskeleton A skeleton that forms the external surface of an animal, as in arthropods.
Pereopods Paired legs in decapods.
Abdomen The portion of a decapod body between the cephalothorax and the tail.
Pleopods Specialized appendage beneath the body of a decapod, also “swimmeret.”
Molt The exoskeleton that is shed during the molting process.
Maxillipeds A food-sorting appendage of some crustaceans.
Antennae A sensory appendage on the head of arthropods.
Nauplius A planktonic larva of many crustaceans.
Carapace The shield-like structure that covers the anterior portion of some crustaceans. The shell of sea turtles.
Cephalothorax The anterior portion of the body of many arthropods, which consists of the head fused with other body segments.
Compound Eyes An eye that consists of numerous light-sensitive units.
