What is the endocrine system? A group of glands that make hormones in your body.
What are hormones? Chemical messengers that tell parts of your body what to do.
What does the endocrine system do? It controls growth, metabolism, development, stress, and keeps your body balanced.
What is negative feedback? When the body fixes something if it gets too high or too low.
Example of negative feedback? Insulin lowers blood sugar when it gets too high.
What is positive feedback? When something keeps increasing until a job is finished.
Example of positive feedback? Oxytocin makes contractions stronger during labor.
Where is the pituitary gland? Under the brain.
Why is the pituitary called the master gland? Because it controls a lot of other glands.
What controls the pituitary gland? The hypothalamus.
What does prolactin do? Helps make milk after childbirth.
What does growth hormone do? Helps your body grow and keeps muscles and bones strong.
What happens if you don’t have enough growth hormone? It can cause dwarfism.
What happens if you have too much growth hormone? It can cause gigantism.
What does ACTH do? Helps the body make cortisol.
What is cortisol? A hormone that helps your body deal with stress.
What does TSH do? Tells the thyroid to make hormones.
What does LH do? Helps control testosterone and estrogen.
What does FSH do? Helps with sperm and egg production.
What does oxytocin do? Helps with childbirth contractions and milk release.
What does ADH do? Helps your body save water.
What is adrenaline? A hormone for fight-or-flight situations.
What does adrenaline do? Speeds up heart rate and breathing.
What does aldosterone do? Helps control blood pressure.
What is Cushing’s disease? Too much cortisol in the body.
What is Addison’s disease? Not enough cortisol in the body.
What does insulin do? Lowers blood sugar.
What does glucagon do? Raises blood sugar.
What is diabetes? A disease where the body has trouble controlling blood sugar.
What is Type 1 diabetes? When the body doesn’t make insulin.
What is Type 2 diabetes? When the body doesn’t use insulin correctly.
What is hypoglycemia? Low blood sugar.
What is hyperglycemia? High blood sugar.
What does melatonin help with? Sleep cycles.
Where is the pancreas? Behind the stomach.
Where are adrenal glands? On top of the kidneys.
What is metabolism? How your body uses food for energy.
What is goiter? When the thyroid gets enlarged.
What causes most goiters? Not enough iodine.
What does the thyroid do? Controls metabolism.
What is hyperthyroidism? When the thyroid is too active.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism? Weight loss, shaking, and fast heartbeat.
What is hypothyroidism? When the thyroid is not active enough.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism? Weight gain, tiredness, and slow heartbeat.
What does the parathyroid do? Controls calcium levels in blood.
What do T3 and T4 do? They control metabolism and how the body uses energy.
What does calcitonin do? Calcitonin helps lower calcium levels in blood.
Where is Calcitonin made? Calcitonin is made by the thyroid
What gland makes PTH? The parathyroid glands.
Where are the parathyroid glands? Behind the thyroid gland.
What does PTH do? It raises calcium levels in the blood by taking calcium from bones.
What gland makes adrenaline? The adrenal glands.
Where is cortisol made? Cortisol is made by the adrenal glands
Where is Aldosterone made? Aldosterone is made by the adrenal glands
What gland makes melatonin? The pineal gland.
What does testosterone do? Helps with male development and sperm production.
What does estrogen do? Helps with female development and reproductive functions.
Where is ACTH made? ACTH is made by the pituitary gland.
Where is TSH made? TSH is made by the pituitary gland.
Where is LH made? LH is made by the pituitary gland.
Where is FSH made? FSH is made by the pituitary gland.
Where is oxytocin made? Oxytocin is released from the posterior pituitary.
Where is ADH made? ADH is released from the posterior pituitary.
Where is growth hormone made? Growth hormone is made by the pituitary gland.
