Scientific/Basics

QuestionAnswer
Describe the scientific method. A process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions.
Order of Scientific Method. Observation-Question-Hypothesis-Experiment-Analyze-Conclusion and Communication
Independent Variables manipulated or changed by researchers to test their effect; the cause in an experiment
Dependent Variables change due to the change in the independent variable. (Turn on stove to boil water (independent) how fast the water boils (dependent) )
Control Group not exposed to the independent variable under investigation. This allows for a baseline against any changes in the experimental group.
Experimental Group exposed to particular manipulations of the independent variable.
Hypothesis Testable and Falsifiable prediction
Standardized Variable kept constant across all groups in an experiment.
Basic Properties of Life Organization, Metabolism, Homeostasis, Growth and Development, Reproduction, Response to Stimuli, Adaptation.
Order the levels of organization. CCTOOO Chemical-Cell-Tissue-Organ-Organ System-Organisms
Chemical The most basic level of life (Atoms, molecules I.E water, proteins, DNA). Building blocks for all of life.
Cell Smallest unit of life, molecules combined to form cells.
Tissue A group of similar cells working together for specific function.
Organ Made of two or more different tissues working together.
Order the components of a homeostatic control mechanism. SRCSE Stimulus-Receptor-Control Center- Set Point-Effector
Stimulus A change in the internal or external environment that disrupts balance.
Receptor A structure that detects the changes and send information.
Control Center Receives information from the receptors, compares it to the set point and decides response.
Set Point Normal target value or range the body tries to maintain.
Effector The organ or cell that carries out the response to restore balance.
Negative Feedback The body detects a change and reverses it to bring conditions back to set point. Ex: body temp, blood glucose
Positive Feedback A process where the body amplifies the original change until the defined outcome is achieved. Ex: Childbirth

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
