Program Management

TermDefinition
Curriculum A detailed guide of what is to be taught to a class or group of students; wide range of concepts, experiences, and materials designed to meet the developmental needs of students
Chronological Grouping Grouping students based on their age
Developmental Grouping Grouping students based on their ability in some area of development
Lesson Plan A detailed written record of steps, questions, and materials needed by teacher to teach a particular topic or standard; A detailed written plan of what and how skill or knowledge will be taught. It includes the standard, learning objective and assessment
Learning Objective The 3 part statement of the learning goal for a lesson. (conditions of performance, observable behavior, and level of performance) (How it is stated) Given _____________ the student will be able to _________________ within __________________.
Assessment A tool used to evaluate learning or understanding
Unit Plan A guide or overview for several days or weeks of study or teaching
Manipulative A 3 dimensional object that students can touch or hold to facilitate learning; the physical tools of teaching, engaging students visually and physically with objects such as coins, blocks, puzzles, markers, etc.
Focus Object Item that students can see to help them concentrate the topic of the day
Introduction A quote, statement, or question used to begin a lesson
Open Ended Materials Teaching tools that encourage creativity
Closed Ended Materials Teaching tools that require a particular product or result
Thematic Unit A segment of study tied to a certain motif
Head Start Model A government funded preschool provided specifically to low income families which offers longer hours, additional supports such as teeth brushing, home visits, parenting classes, and contracts with famlies
Montessori Method Known for sensory learning, learning independence and self reliance, allowing children to choose work and work at their own pace
Reggio Emilia Approach Developed after World War II based on the idea that curiosity is the best motivation for learning. No set curriculum, based on interests
High Scope Approach Believed that children learn best through hands-on experiences with people, materials, events, and ideas. Plan, do, review
GELDS Georgia Early Learning & Development Standards- the knowledge & skills children need to be prepared for kindergarten
Theme a child friendly topic used to make lessons more relatable
Observation A practice of watching a child in order to better understand their levels of knowledge or ability, etc.
Visual Learner A student who learns best through seeing
Auditory Learner A student who learns best by hearing
Kinesthetic Learner A student who learns best if they are engaged in movement or manipulatives during learning
Direct Learning Knowledge gained from intentional lessons
Indirect Learning Knowledge gained incidentally or by observation
Routines Following a particular schedule of activities, lessons and transitions
Transitions The activity or movement between planned lessons or activities
Materials items teachers use in the classroom to support specific learning objectives. examples: books, videos, games, etc.
Independent Study Student driven knowledge acquisition
Differentiate Adjusting teaching and requirements to meet the unique ability or knowledge level of learners
Interactive Learning When a student puts together knowledge and skills by connecting with information and experiences provided by the teacher
Experiential Learning Knowledge gained through life experiences, sometimes unintentionally
Guiding Question the important question that should be answered by a lesson or unit
Standards the detailed explanation of what is expected to be learned through a class or lesson
